"NLP - the most powerful vehicle for change in existence"
Psychology Today Magazine

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) is the study of how one think and why one behaves the way we do.  But it is more than just understanding the how and why; it is about helping one change the way they think and therefore change their behavior.  The result is that one can achieve maximum performance, overcome phobias, improve communications, and much more.

NLP was developed in the early 1970’s by Richard Bandler, who studied computer science and psychology, and John Grinder, a professor of linguistics at the University of California, Santa Cruz.  They studied three well known therapists Virginia Satir (a very effective family therapist), Fritz Pearls (creator of Gestalt Therapy), and Milton H. Erickson, M.D. (the “Godfather” of Modern Hypnosis).  They discovered from watching these that all three were good communicators who could help people who others could not.  They, Bandler and Grinder, modeled their behavior and found that they could achieve the same results.  It is from this that NLP has developed.

The term Neuro-Linguistic Programming may seem like an awkward term but each part of it has significance and meaning:

bullet

Neuro:  Refers to how we perceive (through our five senses: visual, auditory, kinesthetic, smell, taste) and process (through our mind) the world around us.

bullet

Linguistic:  How we use language and other non verbal communication, and how it affects us.

bullet

Programming:  How we use the programs, mental models, that we run inside our heads to communicate with ourselves and others to achieve our goals.  These programs results in our specific behaviors.
